Eastern State Penitentiary

One of my favorite places to photograph has to be Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, PA. I’ve been there twice before, and I jumped at the chance to go there on another Dan’s Camera City expedition. Eastern State is the oldest prison in the United States. It was originally built as a rehabilitation prison, where prisoners were kept in isolated cells so that they could contemplate their crimes and find inspiration for their reform in penitence. Eventually, there were too many prisoners to have one per cell, and the later wings were designed for efficient use of space. The more humane methods were replaced with brutal punishments. Much of the prison is being restored. Going on the expedition with Dan’s allows us to get into areas that are generally not open to the public. This image is an HDR composite of 5 different exposures of the hospital wing. It’s just complete chaos. Would you feel comfortable getting medical care here? I don’t think so!
